First, they have several similarities that we should address. They are both creamy and cheesy sandwiches that are perfect in regards to the taste. However, they also have several differences. This post helps you to choose Croque monsieur or Madame by detailing their recipes.

Croque Monsieur

Croque Monsieur

The original recipe did not have béchamel sauce. It had layers that had bread, butter, cheese, ham, then another layer of the same in reverse.

To make the Croque monsieur, however, you will require several ingredients, which include six tablespoons of butter, 1.5 tablespoons of flour, a cup of milk, one and a half cups of Emmental cheese, salt, 8 slices of bread, sixteen slices of ham and a tablespoon of chopped finely.

First, you will add two tablespoons of butter and Occident flour to a saucepan and heat on medium heat. Stir this mixture until it combines, which is around one minute.

After the minute, add milk and start whisking until you are sure it is smooth. You should then cook while whisking to the point where it coats the spoon back. Reduce the heat, add half a cup of cheese, add salt, and stir until it melts.

Spread butter onto the slices and toast using a frying pan. In case they start drying, add cheese.

Place half of the bread on a board and add two pieces of ham to every two pieces. Then add sauce to the meat, spreading it slowly and sprinkling cheese.

Place each of the sandwiches on a baking tray and heat. Make sure the cheese melts. You should then switch to grill and continue to toast the bread until its top turns brown. Serve with chives on top.

The only difference there is between Croque monsieur vs. Madame is that the Madame recipe will have an addition of four eggs in the ingredients.

The recipes are completely similar to each other. However, when you toast the bread and its top turns brown in the last step, you will cook the eggs.

You will heat butter on a frying pan, using it to cook the eggs. You should then add salt and pepper. When it is ready, move the egg to the sandwich’s top and you have a Croque Madame.
